Trends, tips and timely stats — Week Seven

By Art Edelstein, Contributing writer
Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001

  • Heading into their game vs. the Bills, the Chargers are 3-0 straight up and 3-0 vs. the spread at home. … The Bills are 1-4 against the number in all games this season.
  • With a Monday-night game on tap at Pittsburgh, the Titans are 0-3 against the spread on the road. … The Steelers have won and their only home game but have failed to cover in their last three under the lights, dating back to 1999. … The Titans’ loss to Miami in Week One snapped a three-game streak in which Tennessee had won and covered at night. … The Titans are the only team that has not lost a fumble. … Despite having a dominating defense so far, the Steelers have only five takeaways.
  • Something has to give when the Jets travel to Carolina. New York is last in rushing defense, and the Panthers are last in rushing offense.
  • The opposite will be true in Chicago, where the Bears, who have the No. 1 run defense in the NFC, take on the 49ers, who have the top rushing offense in the NFC. … Chicago has surrendered only run rushing TD.
  • Heading into their game in Seattle, the Dolphins have not recorded an interception since Week One and have no takeaways in 3-of-5 games.
  • The Broncos’ offense has been held to fewer than 300 total yards three times this season. Last season it only happened once.
  • Colts RB Edgerrin James has not scored a touchdown since Week Two.
  • Redskins RB Stephen Davis has not scored a touchdown in his last eight games.
  • The Bengals have six TD catches by six different receivers.
  • Only five AFC teams have records below .500. Surprisingly, two of the teams are the Titans and Colts, both at 2-3.
