Trends, tips and timely stats — Week Six

By Art Edelstein, Contributing writer
Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001

  • The struggling Jaguars offense has a chance to get well Thursday night vs. a Bills run defense allowing an average of 144.5 yards per game. … Buffalo has not forced a turnover in 3-of-4 games this season, matching its total for all of last season. … The Bills are 6-1 straight up and vs. the spread in their last seven night games, while the Jaguars are 1-4 against the number in their last five under the lights.
  • Heading into their game at San Diego, the Broncos’ pass offense has really struggled without WR Ed McCaffrey (173.3 yards per game in their last four contests). … Denver has won and covered their last four games at San Diego.
  • Prior to this weekend's game at Cleveland, the Ravens have held all five opponents to 67 or fewer yards rushing.
  • Something must give when the Panthers travel to Washington. Carolina is last in rushing offense (62.2 yards per game), while the Redskins are last in rushing defense (169.2 yards per game). … The matchup of the other two units is equally interesting. Washington’s 226 combined offensive yards Monday night was a season high. The Redskins are last in total offense by more than 70 yards per game. Meanwhile, Carolina’s opponents have gained at least 343 yards in each game this season. … The Redskins have not controlled the ball for more than 24:48 in any game.
  • Heading into their game vs. the Titans, the Lions, who had 42 takeaways last season, have five takeaways in four games.
  • It’s no surprise that the winless Redskins and Lions are the only two teams without a rushing TD.
  • Going into their game against the Rams, the Jets have not had a turnover since Week One and are the only team that has not thrown an interception. … The Rams’ defense has forced two or more turnovers in 4-of-5 games.
  • With a Week Six game at Tampa Bay coming next, Steelers QB Kordell Stewart has not thrown an interception since Week One. On the other hand, he has thrown only one touchdown pass this season. … The Buccaneers’ defense has picked off eight passes in four games.
  • The Packers have covered three of their last four games at Minnesota.
  • Heading into their game at Indianapolis, the Patriots have covered four straight vs. the Colts.
