Week Seven

PFW Players of the Week

As published in print Oct. 29, 2001

Offense

QB Shane Matthews
Chicago Bears

Called into action after starter Jim Miller left with a bruised hip in the second quarter, Matthews stepped up in a big way, rallying the Bears to a dramatic come-from-behind win. Matthews completed 25-of-31 passes for 166 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

SS Sammy Knight
New Orleans Saints

Knight seems to have a real nose for the football, and he proved it once again in the win over the Rams. Knight recorded eight tackles, one sack for a four-yard loss and two interceptions which he returned for a total of 34 yards.

PK John Carney
New Orleans Saints

The Saints needed everything they could get from Carney vs. the Rams, and he gave them a perfect day, nailing all five of his field-goal attempts (from 33, 44, 44, 23 and 27 yards out). The last of Carney’s field goals came with one second left to win the game for New Orleans 34-31.
