AT A GLANCE: The Jets and Dolphins square off for the
second time this season, but this time for first place in the AFC East. New York won the
first matchup 21-17 after trailing 17-0 at halftime.
|
| OVERVIEW: Both teams are coming off impressive wins and
have improved their standing at the top of the AFC East. The Jets are 6-3 and have won
three straight games, including road wins over Carolina and New Orleans. The Jets are 4-0
on the road this season. Last week they beat the Chiefs 27-7, their largest margin of
victory this season.
RB Curtis Martin continued his rushing dominance last week against the Chiefs, racking
up 113 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Jets control the clock and keeping their
defense off the field.
The Dolphins beat the Colts 27-24, their first victory in Indianapolis since 1997. The
win was also Miamis third straight. The Dolphins are 3-0 at home this year,
including an impressive win over the Raiders in Week Two.
Dolphins WR Chris Chambers had a breakout game against the Colts, scoring two
touchdowns, including a 74-yarder in the second quarter.
When the Jets have the ball:
Its no secret that the Jets will pound Martin, and the way Martin has run this
year, the Dolphins defense will have its hands full.
Martin leads the league in rushing and the Jets have been trying to rely less on him in
the passing game. The idea was to keep Martin rested, and that seems to be working.
The Dolphins defense has been more stout than last years stellar squad, but
the major difference has been in the big-play department. Miami has rebounded in the last
two games in this area, but overall, the team has struggled to create turnovers and
pressure the quarterback. The loss of DT Jermaine Haley (thumb) hurts Miamis depth
and forces starters Tim Bowens and Daryl Gardener to play more. Haley is expected to miss
another week or two. |

| The Jets have allowed only 13 sacks in nine games, but if the Dolphins can rattle QB
Vinny Testaverde, he could make mistakes. Dolphins DRE Jason Taylor recorded his
team-leading fifth sack last week. Hell face Jets OLT Jason Fabini, one of the more
underrated tackles in the game. ORG Randy Thomas (ankle) has missed some time, but the
line hasnt skipped a beat with J.P. Machado in the lineup. Testaverde likely will
have another target in the passing game, as the anticipated debut of top draft pick
Santana Moss should finally arrive. Check his status, however, as the Jets want to be
certain his knee is ready for action. Moss would join WRs Wayne Chrebet and Laveranues
Coles in the passing game.
The Jets installed a new scheme this offseason, and the system is finally beginning to
click. A healthy Moss should give the Jets another downfield threat. But the
Dolphins secondary remains top-notch and certainly will try to derail the Jets
offensive progress. SS Brian Walker (thumb) is expected to miss another 2-3 weeks, but
backup Arturo Freeman is emerging and is worthy of a starting job.
When the Dolphins have the ball:
Dolphins QB Jay Fiedler has had a few good games, but his continued turnover problems
are disconcerting. Against the Colts, Fiedler threw two TD passes but was picked off
twice. He has a 9-12 TD-interception ratio on the year. That doesnt bode well for
the Dolphins, since the Jets are the leagues top team in turnover margin at plus-17.
RB Lamar Smith continues to struggle running the ball, but thats more an
extension of the offensive lines problems than Smiths. Free-agent addition
Todd Perry hasnt lived up to expectations, and the Dolphins are on their third
starting left tackle after the first two were injured.
The Jets struggled early in the year against the run, but have since found the right
combination and have been stout up the middle. Head coach Herman Edwards challenged the
Jets defensive linemen to play better, and theyve responded. After allowing an
average of 167.5 rushing yards through six games, New York has surrendered 100.0 in the
last three.
DE John Abraham has busted out the past three weeks, registering six sacks in that
time, and DT Steve Martin has played very well the past two games.
The Jets secondary isnt as highly regarded as Miamis, but it has
certainly played well enough to warrant respect. The unit will be tested by an improving
corps of Miami receivers.
The Jets LB corps remains a strength of the team, despite a loss of depth in the
offseason.
