Dolphins release Gardener; add ex-Panther Williams

DL Daryl Gardener was released by the Dolphins Friday because of lingering back trouble and his disinterest in rehabbing the injury. A six-year veteran, Gardener was a first-round draft choice in 1996. He underwent back surgery last season, when he played in just eight games. Williams was rumored to be released around the June 1 deadline for veterans but he renegotiated his deal to stay with the Panthers. Williams, 30, is in the final year of a contract that will pay him $1.65 million. The Dolphins apparently plan to use DE Rob Burnett and Williams in a rotation at right defensive end, opposite LDE Jason Taylor.

Buchsbaum: In a shocking move, the Dolphins released DL Daryl Gardener and traded DE Al Wallace and a fourth-round pick in 2003 for DE Jay Williams. Williams is a decent to mid-level player who played better two years ago than last year and formerly played for the Rams. Gardener came into the league with a reputation as a lazy underachiever but worked hard for a while under Jimmy Johnson. However, last year he started to slack off a little bit and had a terrible offseason. A series of back problems also made him a medical risk. That was too much for the Dolphins, who didn’t want to pay him all year if he couldn’t contribute.
