Texans sign Max Lane
Free-agent OL Max Lane signed a contract with the Houston Texans on Thursday. Lane
played seven seasons with the New England Patriots but did not play in the NFL last
season. Lane, a 6-6, 310-pounder, has started 71 of 100 career games, mostly at right
tackle, but he’s also started at left and right guard. He was a sixth-round pick by
the Patriots out of the Naval Academy in 1994.
Buchsbaum: It’s a nothing-to-lose type of signing because he ends up counting the
veteran minimum, $450,000, against their cap. He had a few decent years in New England but
was greatly overpaid by the Patriots, who at that time had a personnel department that
thought he was a red-chip player when he really was an average starter or a good backup.
In his last two years in New England, his play really tailed off. Now, after his hiatus or
sabbatical or whatever you want to call it, if he can regain the form he showed earlier in
his Patriots career, he could be an adequate-at-best starter but a very good backup who
could play guard or tackle for Houston. |
