Happily ever after

By Ron Pollack, Editor-in-chief
Updated Aug. 29, 2001

Stories about former pro football players who have fallen on hard times usually end on a sour note.

Injury woes that are destroying their quality of life; health problems; family crisis … The list goes on and on.

It is worth noting, however, that not every one of these stories ends in disaster.

In many cases, former pro football players take the bad hand they have been dealt and make something very positive out of the situation.

This series will look at some of these stories that, once upon a time, started with a terrible beginning only to ultimately end happily ever after.

This week's story ...

Part V: Charging to a better life: Miles McPherson gave up drugs during his football playing days and eventually found his mission as God’s messenger

Part IV: A leg up on perspective: Amputation surgery did not prevent Curt Marsh from finding a career more rewarding than football

Part III: Man on the move: Paralysis has not knocked Mike Utley down for the count

Part II: A stroke of bad luck: Bob Long keeps bouncing back from unlikely setbacks

Part I: In the Nick of time: Buoniconti has been raising money for spinal-cord research ever since his son was injured
