An early taste of fantasy football

Wetting the appetite of hard-core fantasy fanatics

By Ron Pollack, Editor-in-chief

For those of you who hate everything fantasy football, I apologize.

For those of you who would gladly give up a paycheck if it meant you could get an extra first-round draft pick in your fantasy draft (in other words, all of you hard-core fantasy football lunatics), I’m about to give you the equivalent of water to a man crawling through the torrid desert.

I give you an early taste of fantasy football.

Just a taste, mind you. Not the whole meal.

We are working on our fantasy football annual these days. During the last two days, we have held our basic and yardage mock drafts for that annual, which hits the newsstands later this summer.

I drafted two teams in each of those mock drafts. I thought you might be interested in seeing what kind of team you can get in a 10-team league. We drafted based upon the premise that TD passes are worth three points for quarterbacks and touchdowns scored are worth six points. In the basic scoring league, there are minor yardage bonuses. In the yardage league, yards matter much more.

So let’s see what you can expect.

Basic draft

The first team I drafted picked out of the No. 4 slot in the 10-team mock. It was as follows:

WR Terrell Owens
QB Jeff Garcia
RB Antowain Smith
RB Michael Bennett
TE Bubba Franks
RB Terrell Davis
WR Derrick Mason
WR Rod Gardner
RB Tiki Barber
PK Jason Elam
WR Amani Toomer
QB Kerry Collins
WR D’Wayne Bates
Chargers defense
PK Paul Edinger
Seahawks defense

The second team I drafted picked out of the No. 9 slot. It was as follows:

WR Randy Moss
RB Curtis Martin
RB Fred Taylor
WR Tim Brown
RB T.J. Duckett
QB Steve McNair
WR James Thrash
WR Peerless Price
PK Mike Vanderjagt
RB Duce Staley
TE Wesley Walls
Eagles defense
WR Ike Hilliard
PK Mike Hollis
49ers defense
QB Jay Fiedler

I thought that the best players that went undrafted were as follows:

Quarterbacks — Brad Johnson, Tom Brady, Vinny Testaverde, Drew Brees.
Running backs — Tyrone Wheatley, Mike Anderson, Jonathan Wells, Lamar Smith.
Wide receivers — Jerome Pathon, Travis Taylor, J.J. Stokes, Bill Schroeder, Donald Hayes, Marcus Robinson, Antonio Freeman.
Tight ends — Dave Moore, Desmond Clark, Eric Johnson, Kyle Brady, Rickey Dudley, Cam Cleeland, Stephen Alexander, Jay Riemersma.

Yardage-league draft

In our yardage-league mock draft, the first team I drafted chose out of the No. 2 slot. It was as follows:

RB Shaun Alexander
WR Rod Smith
RB Stephen Davis
WR Kevin Johnson
QB Aaron Brooks
WR Amani Toomer
RB Jamal Lewis
QB Brian Griese
PK Jeff Wilkins
WR Ike Hilliard
WR Cris Carter
RB Dominic Rhodes
PK Mike Hollis
TE Wesley Walls

The second team I drafted chose out of the No. 8 slot. It was as follows:

WR Terrell Owens
RB Curtis Martin
WR Tim Brown
RB William Green
RB Michael Bennett
QB Rich Gannon
WR Rod Gardner
WR Peerless Price
QB Kordell Stewart
TE Bubba Franks
WR Joe Jurevicius
PK Doug Brien
PK Adam Vinatieri
RB Tyrone Wheatley

I thought that the best players that went undrafted were as follows:

Quarterbacks — Tom Brady, Jay Fiedler, Vinny Testaverde, Drew Brees.
Running backs — Ron Dayne,Tony Richardson, Mike Anderson, Lamar Smith.
Wide receivers — Donald Hayes, Raghib Ismail, Jeff Graham, J.J. Stokes, Corey Bradford, D’Wayne Bates.
Tight ends — Anthony Becht, Desmond Clark, Kyle Brady, Alge Crumpler, Dave Moore, Todd Heap, Jay Riemersma, Eric Johnson, Rickey Dudley, Stephen Alexander, Cam Cleeland.
