Dare to draft Dolphins
Where does Miamis offense fit in fantasy-wise?
By Andy Hanacek, Associate editor

| If youre looking for a quick-fix,
high-potential draft pick in the middle rounds of your draft this year, someone who can
step in, start and offer the potential to win a starting job on your team, look no further
than the tip of Florida. Miamis offense finished last season ranked 26th
overall. Pretty pathetic, I know, especially when you consider that New Englands
offense ranked 22nd. But there are three reasons why you should certainly
consider adding a little splash to your roster.
- The running game: The Dolphins, led by RB Lamar Smiths
renaissance, were ranked 14th in the league in rushing. Smith finished 2000
with 1,139 yards and 14 touchdowns, very good fantasy production, especially from a player
few people expected to break out so well. Add to the awesome scoring and yardage potential
the fact that the Dolphins tied for second fewest fumbles lost in the league (9), and you
have some consistent, reliable production.
- The blocking: If theres one thing QB Jay Fiedler and Smith had
last season, it was a solid offensive line leading the way for them. The Dolphins tied for
fifth in the league in sacks allowed, giving up just 28 sacks all season. Smith averaged a
healthy 3.7 yards per carry on the season.
- Improved receiving corps: Miami practically gutted last seasons
receiving corps, with Oronde Gadsden being the only significant holdover. Gadsden, as
Fiedlers go-to guy last season, caught just 56 passes for 786 yards and six
touchdowns. This year, the brought in speedy James McKnight, Dedric Ward and drafted fast
and physical Chris Chambers. Fiedler now has better targets to work with.
- Niftier scheming: Now that Fiedler and Co. have a year in Chan
Gaileys scheme, Gailey can work some wrinkles into it. Look for less conservative
sets and newer patterns that will take advantage of the skills of the players on the team.
Also, look for backup QB Ray Lucas to be very involved as a running quarterback, and
possibly lined up outside on occasion.
Simply put, it wouldnt be a mistake to take some Dolphins. Just because the days
of Dan Marino are almost forgotten doesnt mean there isnt fantasy value to be
mined from Miami. Smith doesnt seem like a sure thing, but given his numbers last
season, as well as the factors going into this season, he almost should be. Fiedler would
do best as your backup to start, while any of the receivers should be considered
spot-starters until they prove their worth in Miami. Remember, their success hinges upon
Fiedlers continued maturation.
