Joel Buchsbaum's college notepad

By Joel Buchsbaum, Contributing editor
As published in print Nov. 12, 2001

Right now, the Heisman Trophy race looks like it’s going to come down to two quarterbacks — Florida’s Rex Grossman and Eric Crouch of Nebraska. I’d give Grossman the nod because he’s been so productive, and he’s going to have a national spotlight game this weekend against Florida State. If he does well against FSU and Tennessee, I think the award will be his. ... Two players who will not get much Heisman Trophy consideration but deserve a lot of it are Fresno State QB David Carr and Indiana QB Antwaan Randle El. I don’t know two players in college football who do more for their teams than those two. Carr is an outstanding passer with tremendous guts who probably would be just as effective, if not more effective, than Grossman if he had the receivers and talent around him Grossman has at Florida. Randle El is the most dynamic player in college football. He often carries the entire Indiana offense on his shoulders and is the reason the Hoosiers are so explosive. ... If Miami (Fla.) wants to win the national championship, the Hurricanes are going to have to start playing with a greater sense of urgency than they’ve played with recently and get better play from overrated QB Ken Dorsey. ... The best player in Division I-AA may be Villanova’s all-purpose RB Brian Westbrook, who ran for 287 yards and four touchdowns and caught a TD pass against Hofstra. Though their styles are a little different, Westbrook reminds me of Dave Meggett when Meggett was at Towson State University.
