Pro Football Weekly and Riddell present ...
2002 NFL draft

Q&A with Ohio State CB Derek Ross

April 1, 2002

Three and out has been a recipe for success among Ohio State cornerbacks in recent years. Shawn Springs (Seattle), Ahmed Plummer (Miami), Antoine Winfield (Buffalo) and Nate Clements (Buffalo) have taken the short road to NFL prominence from the Buckeyes’ program, leaving after three years at the college level. Junior Derek Ross has similar results in mind after forgoing his senior season to enter the 2002 draft.

Q: What is it about Ohio State cornerbacks and the four years of eligibility?

A: A lot of us intend on getting our degree. Right now, we need to put our careers in perspective and take care of our family members and ourselves while we try to reach our goals.

Q: Why was the time right for you to leave?

A: I think you really have to look at it for the individual. I felt like I had accomplished some things that I wanted to do at Ohio State and it is a dream to play in the NFL. It wasn’t an easy decision, but I think I made the right one.

Q: What kind of influence were the cornerbacks that played for the Buckeyes before you?

A: A great influence and great role models. That is a pretty successful group you are talking about right there. We’ll see how we do on the next level.

Q: For you personally, what would making a splash in the NFL mean?

A: I don’t expect to go to the NFL and be the best corner or something. I know it is a process. But my goal is to be a very good NFL player. I think I can do that.

Q: There are a lot of good receivers in the NFL. Who is the best receiver you’ve ever faced?

A: The one I faced that was the best is already there. David Boston, when I faced him each day in practice, he is the best receiver I’ve faced. He’s big, physical, he taught me a lot about this game.

Q: What will be the most difficult part of making the jump to the NFL? Have you talked to the other Ohio State guys about that?

A: I think a lot of people talk about the speed difference. I know the game is played a little more quickly and the players are faster, but I think the toughest part is knowing that there is a great player around every corner. You might face David Boston one week and Terrell Owens or someone like that the next. When I talk to those other (Ohio State) guys, it is about a lot of different things. Not always football.

Q: What would you have gained by returning for your senior season?

A: I don’t know. I didn’t do that, I made my decision, and I’m happy with where I am.
