2002 NFL draft

Q&A with Boston College RB William Green

April 4, 2002

Teammate Marc Colombo said junior RB William Green is a great warrior and the best player he has ever shared the field with. How that will translate to the NFL remains to be seen, though Green figures to be one of the first two backs selected April 20 in the NFL Draft. A big back with size to spare and speed to burn, Green is a unique combination that projects into a franchise-type talent. Cleveland, which picks 16th, is one definite suitor, but Green might not last until the middle of the first round.

Q: Is there any competition in your mind to be the first back taken?

A: I don’t think that I would say it is competition. It’s more of a personal goal of mine to be the best. I’ve always wanted to be the best. You work hard and you want to go as high as you can go.

Q: What do you have to prove?

A: I don’t feel like I have anything to prove. I’ll do what I’ve always been doing. Playing in the NFL has always been a dream and I’ll just be thankful to play on an NFL team.

Q: Is there any question about you being just an outside runner because of your speed?

A: Not to me there isn’t. I think these teams know that running the ball, I’m the complete package and I can also catch the ball.

Q: You were suspended for one game in each of the last two seasons. Why?

A: That was a violation of a team rule. I’d like to keep it at that unless you are a general manager.

Q: What was the deciding factor for you to come out after your junior year?

A: I talked to my coach and family and did research. I found out I had a chance to go in the first round. Like I said, the NFL is a lifelong dream, and I didn’t want to take a chance that I would come back to (Boston College) and that dream wouldn’t come true. I went when I had the chance.

Q: Does your speed separate you from the others?

A: I’m not sure where I fall now, but that is something I worked really hard on. I have no idea what my best time would be, but I can get better.

Q: Where do you want to improve the most?

A: Everywhere. Like I said, you can only get better if you work hard and keep after it. I like to think I have a good work ethic and that is why I’m here. I can run better, catch the ball better, everything.

Q: Can you describe your running style?

A: Determined. I’m a very determined runner, very determined football player. I run the football with passion.

Q: Is there an NFL player you admire or pattern your game after?

A: I couldn’t say. When I’m out there I really just run. Growing up, I always liked Barry Sanders, and right now I like Edgerrin James. Barry Sanders did things on the field no other running back could do. When I watched him, I said ‘Wow!’ He’s different than any other running back.

Q: Will we say ‘Wow!’ when we see you in the NFL?

A: I hope so. I won’t say it will be to the extent of Barry Sanders, but I hope to give you some highlights.

Q: You were recruited by Miami (Fla.), correct?

A: Yes. I was recruited by Miami, but I decided to go to Boston College because I was more comfortable there.

Q: Being in Boston, did you become a Patriots fan this year?

A: I’ve always liked the Patriots. Just being in Boston, that is the thing.

Q: Who has been the most influential on your football life?

A: My mother. She is a tough woman, very determined and never showed any quit.

Q: What is the first thing you will buy when you sign a contract?

A: I have always liked horses. I think I’m going to try and buy a place and get some horses. I want to ride horses. I just like the big animal — strong and fast.

Q: Is Emmitt Smith a guy you watched?

A: Him and Barry Sanders were my generation. Emmitt is very durable; he’s been around forever. I hope he gets the (rushing) record this year. I hope God blesses me to play that long. Emmitt is a very blessed man to be able to play that long.
