Jaguars’ Coughlin would make sense as Notre Dame coach

By Joel Buchsbaum, Contributing editor
Dec. 3, 2001

Right now, Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Tom Coughlin looks like the most obvious choice to become Notre Dame’s new head coach.

Coughlin fits all the criteria Notre Dame would want in a coach to a "T." He was a very successful college head coach at a Catholic program with recruiting limitations because of academics. (He had a 21-12-1 record from 1991 to ’93 at Boston College.) He never was touched by a scandal or flaw and is known for his meticulous preparation and professionalism.

While he has enjoyed some great success as an NFL coach, it does appear that he may be wearing out his welcome in Jacksonville. And he’s having more and more trouble using his approach to motivate the same pro athletes he’s worked with for so many years. In college, you only have the same players for four years.

The other two leading candidates would appear to be college head coaches from the Pacific-10 Conference — Mike Bellotti of Oregon (59-23 in seven years as the Ducks’ head coach) and Tyrone Willingham of Stanford (44-33-1 in seven years as the Cardinal’s head coach).
