Midseason All-America team

By Joel Buchsbaum, Contributing editor
As published in print Ocgt. 22, 2001

David Carr
Bulldogs QB
David Carr
Offense

QB David Carr / Fresno State
QB Woodrow Dantzler / Clemson (tie)
They are the two players who have done the most to elevate their teams and should be co-leaders in the race for the Heisman Trophy. Carr is a tough, gutty leader and a terrific thrower, while Dantzler is a great running back who can throw the ball and think on his feet.

RB DeShaun Foster / UCLA
Fumbles are still a problem, but Foster has carried the UCLA offense and helped to keep the defense well-rested by moving the chains.

RB Luke Staley / Brigham Young
Outstanding receiver and runner with a nose for the endzone.

TE Daniel Graham / Colorado
Very athletic player who catches well and is an effective position blocker.

WR Marquise Walker / Michigan
Walker is not quite as fast or athletic as David Terrell was, but he is a better route runner and a more reliable, tougher receiver. He’s also a terrific kick-blocker and good returner.

WR Lee Evans / Wisconsin
An explosive, acrobatic big-play maker.

OL Bryant McKinnie / Miami (Fla.)
Uses his huge wingspan and surprising athletic ability to keep QB Ken Dorsey from getting hit. McKinnie has tremendous size and upside, but he does not always play with a sense of urgency.

OL Mike Williams / Texas
As big and almost as talented — if not as talented — as Leonard Davis was.

OL Toniu Fonoti / Nebraska
The man the Huskers love to run behind.

OL Kendall Simmons / Auburn
A better college player than Victor Riley was.

OL Andre Gurode / Colorado
Excels as both a center and guard.

Defense

DL Dwight Freeney / Syracuse
A great speed rusher with tremendous initial quickness.

DL Dewayne White / Louisville
Can take over and dominate a game. Superquick and active.

DL Julius Peppers / North Carolina
He is only just learning how to play the game, but nobody has more talent.

DL Alex Brown / Florida
Playing harder than he ever has before.

LB Kalimba Edwards / South Carolina
Terrific pass rusher who can play the run and even drop into coverage.

LB Roy Williams / Oklahoma
The Sooners list him as a strong safety, but he plays more like a linebacker and dominates vs. the run.

LB Robert Thomas / UCLA
Is playing 10 times better than he played last year and looks like he is two steps faster.

DB Phillip Buchanon / Miami (Fla.)
The best player in the nation’s best secondary. Really excels in coverage.

DB Quentin Jammer / Texas
Big, physical bump-and-run type of corner who can manhandle or run with most receivers.

DB Keyuo Craver / Nebraska
Top cover man and athlete.

DB Edward Reed / Miami (Fla.)
Makes big plays and bigger plays.

PK Damon Duval / Auburn
A one-man kicking game (handles punts as well) with three game-winning kicks the first half of the season.

Coach Bob Stoops / Oklahoma
For the second year in a row, the Sooners look like the best-coached team in America. Fresno State’s Pat Hill and Maryland’s Ralph Friedgen also deserve serious consideration.
