PFW's Game of the Week

Jaguars, Titans both looking to take the next step

ALLTEL Stadium, Jacksonville, Fla.
Sunday, Sept. 26

AT A GLANCE: Two early-season undefeated teams battle in a key AFC Central contest. The Jaguars are dreaming of an AFC championship, while the Titans are trying to shake the .500 stigma that has haunted them for three years.

The balance of power shifted in the AFC Central last season. In 1998, the Jaguars won the division — the first time the Steelers hadn’t finished atop the standings since 1993.

With one division title under their belts, the Jaguars (2-0) are looking to take the next step with a Super Bowl appearance. Already known as a team with a high-octane offense, the Jaguars have really focused on fixing what had been their weakness, the defense. Based on the first two games of the regular season, the Jaguars have taken some big steps in the right direction.

Meanwhile, the Titans (2-0) are off to their best start since 1991. After three straight 8-8 seasons, the Titans are desperate to get above the .500 mark and into the playoffs.

The Jaguars have won straight up and covered the spread in four of their last five meetings with the Titans/Oilers. However, Jacksonville’s last loss at home came at the hands of Tennessee last season.

WHEN THE TITANS HAVE THE BALL:

With QB Steve McNair out several weeks after undergoing back surgery, the offense is now in the hands of Neil O’Donnell. O’Donnell is familiar with the tendencies of Jaguars defensive coordinator Dom Capers as both men were with the Steelers earlier this decade. While the Titans lose McNair’s mobility, they gain O’Donnell’s veteran smarts and accuracy.

Look for the Titans to first try to establish the run with Eddie George, who benefits from the fine blocking of FB Lorenzo Neal and an outstanding offensive line. However, it won’t be a cakewalk against a Jaguars defense that has held each of its first two opponents under 100 yards rushing.

On the whole, Jacksonville’s defense appears to be much improved. Last season, the Jaguars held the opposition under 300 total yards only once. So far this year, the Jaguars have limited the 49ers to 203 yards and the Panthers to 283.

TE Frank Wycheck is an outstanding safety valve for O’Donnell, but the Titans want to throw the ball downfield to WRs Yancey Thigpen and Kevin Dyson. They may try to test rookie CB Fernando Bryant, who picked off his first NFL pass last week.

WHEN THE JAGUARS HAVE THE BALL:

The Jaguars’ offense appears to be in midseason form. It held the ball for more than 35 minutes vs. the 49ers in Week One before piling up 414 yards vs. the Panthers.

QB Mark Brunell is playing with great confidence and has really found a groove with WR Jimmy Smith, who has 16 catches for 254 yards in two games. With Keenan McCardell as Brunell’s No. 2 target, Titans CBs Samari Rolle and Denard Walker are in for a big challenge.

The Titans believe the center of their defense — with DTs Jason Fisk and Mike Jones and MLB Barron Wortham — is very strong, but they surrendered 284 rushing yards in the first two weeks. That could mean trouble for Tennessee, considering the Jaguars have a very dangerous stable of running backs that includes Fred Taylor (foot and hamstring injuries; check status), James Stewart and Tavian Banks.

The Titans have an emerging pass rush that recorded seven sacks last week. A key matchup pits dangerous rookie DLE Jevon Kearse vs. veteran ORT Leon Searcy.
