PFW's Game of the Week

Buccaneers at Seahawks
Kingdome, Seattle, Wash.,
Sunday, Nov. 28

AT A GLANCE: The Seahawks (8-2) are in very good shape in their quest to make the postseason for the first time since 1988. But the Buccaneers (6-4), who are in the thick of the NFC Central race, should present a stiff challenge.

OVERVIEW: Tampa Bay and Seattle entered the NFL together as expansion teams in 1976. They have never both made the playoffs in the same season, and only once, in 1979, have both finished with winning records in the same season.

But this season both teams are factors in the playoff hunt. The Buccaneers (6-4) are in the thick of the NFC Central race. After a one-week benching, QB Trent Dilfer has returned to the lineup with more fire in his belly.

Seattle (8-2) has opened up a lead in the AFC West. It has been a startling turn for a team with the NFL’s longest playoff drought: The Seahawks have not made it to the postseason since the 1988 season.

The Seahawks have won all four meetings between these clubs. Those four games were decided by a total of just 15 points.

WHEN THE BUCCANEERS HAVE THE BALL:

Dilfer was benched in favor of Eric Zeier in Week Eight, but Zeier suffered a rib injury in that game, re-opening the door for Dilfer. He has taken advantage of his second chance, leading the Buccaneers to three straight wins. His new No. 1 target is diminutive Jacquez Green, who has exceptional speed and can make big plays. Fellow WRs Bert Emanuel and Karl Williams returned to the lineup last week after missing time with injuries.

The Seahawks’ pass defense will give up yardage and sometimes surrenders a big gain. But CB Shawn Springs leads a ball-hawking unit that can make big plays of its own.

Seattle’s secondary is aided by a strong pass rush. Tampa Bay, which has struggled at both OG spots this season, will have to account for DRT Cortez Kennedy, who is having a very strong season. DLT Sam Adams (knee) sat out last week (check status). DEs Michael Sinclair, who is bothered by a groin injury, and Phillip Daniels can also create pressure.

While Dilfer gets much of the attention, the Buccaneers’ offense remains a run-first operation. Mike Alstott provides a smash-mouth inside presence, while Warrick Dunn brings an outside burst. Alstott has struggled with fumbles this season.

WHEN THE SEAHAWKS HAVE THE BALL:

Seattle’s offense has big-play potential now that WR Joey Galloway is back. While Galloway has not posted huge numbers since returning, opponents must account for his speed.

QB Jon Kitna has been very effective this season. While he has not made a ton of plays down the field, he has spread the ball around and moved the team. WR Derrick Mayes has been one of his favorite targets so far, and Sean Dawkins played a big role last week.

Kitna will probably be throwing against zone coverage vs. the Bucs. Tampa Bay tries to create pressure mainly with its front four. CBs Donnie Abraham and Ronde Barber are quality cover men, and nickel DB Brian Kelly is solid.

The Buccaneers may be able to create some pressure against the right side of Seattle’s offensive line. ORT Grant Williams has improved since injuries forced him into the lineup, but he can still be beaten. DLE Chidi Ahanatou, a dangerous pass rusher, presents a huge challenge. The Seahawks must also account for DTs Brad Culpepper and Warren Sapp. Sapp is one of the most disruptive defenders in the league.

RB Ricky Watters has not had his best year, but he showed some burst last week. Galloway’s presence may keep SS John Lynch, a good player vs. the run, out of the box more than the Bucs would like.
