Thanksgiving bonus:
Dolphins at Cowboys

OVERVIEW: There are a lot of subplots in this matchup. First, this is the first time Jimmy Johnson returns to Dallas since leaving the Cowboys (5-5). It is also a rematch of a memorable 1993 Thanksgiving Day game that featured a snowy field and a botched blocked field goal by Cowboys DT Leon Lett. The Dolphins (8-2) won that game 16-14.

DOLPHINS OUTLOOK: The third subplot is whether QB Dan Marino (neck) will be available, which will likely be a game-time decision. The decision may be influenced by the broken nose suffered by QB Damon Huard in Week 11. If Marino is back, the Dolphins may be inclined to throw more often. However, the running game appears to be on track with J.J. Johnson recording the first 100-yard rushing day by a Dolphins back this season.

COWBOYS OUTLOOK: Troy Aikman will likely return after missing two and a half games due to a concussion, but OG Larry Allen (knee) will likely be missing. RB Emmitt Smith, playing with a fractured hand, will face eight-man fronts from the outstanding Dolphins defense. Without WR Michael Irvin in the lineup, the Cowboys’ passing game has been no better than average. It could be a difficult day for Aikman and WRs Raghib Ismail and Ernie Mills vs. CBs Sam Madison (six picks) and Terrell Buckley.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH: If this game comes down to a field goal, the Dolphins should have the advantage. Miami PK Olindo Mare has been very reliable, whereas Dallas PK Richie Cunningham has been shaky.
