Rams acquire Williams via trade

The Rams continued the rebuilding of their defense over the weekend, adding veteran Pro Bowl CB Aeneas Williams in a draft-day trade with the Cardinals. Williams agreed to a three-year, $13 million deal with the Rams, who surrendered second- and fourth-round picks for him.

Buchsbaum: Williams is a great fit for the defense because he’s got a couple of years left, they have a bunch of young corners and he can give them the leadership and direction they need.

Profootballweekly.com: Can you give a scouting report on his physical attributes at this point?

Buchsbaum: He’s still a good athlete and still has playing speed because he anticipates so well. His reaction to the ball and techniques are excellent.

Green, Horne and Holmes  head to Kansas City

The Chiefs finally put the finishing touches on a trade that had been in the works for weeks, acquiring Rams QB Trent Green. The Chiefs, who also got the Rams’ fifth-round choice and a promise St. Louis would not match the offer the Chiefs made for WR-RS Tony Horne, had to surrender their 12th overall pick for Green. The Chiefs also agreed to a five-year, $8 million contract with former Ravens RB Priest Holmes.

Profootballweekly.com: How does the Chiefs’ offense look to you now?

Buchsbaum: Well, they’ve got a quarterback who knows the system, who can be efficient and a very accurate passer with good toughness and intangibles. They’ve got a running back who isn’t great but is a major upgrade over what they had last year, and he also fits the system very well.

Profootballweekly.com: This is a fairly above-average offense at this point, isn’t it?

Buchsbaum: It can be an explosive offense because they have the making of a very good line and have terrific talent at the receiver positions.

Profootballweekly.com: Green put up good numbers last season, but it didn’t seem like the offense clicked entirely with him.

Buchsbaum: No, but he gets a full camp with this offense, and he’s a year further away from his knee surgery.

Raiders get TE Williams from Rams

The Raiders acquired TE Roland Williams from the Rams for a fourth-round pick in the draft. Williams, at 6-5 and 269 pounds, caught 11 passes for 102 yards and three scores while starting 11 games in St. Louis last year.

Buchsbaum: I’m not a big Roland Williams fan. He’s very immature and makes too many mistakes, but he has talent. He’s a big tight end who can catch the ball, and he has a chance to develop into a blocker, but he gets called for way too many penalties.

Bills re-sign Christie

The Bills re-signed PK Steve Christie, the team’s all-time scoring leader. The 12-year veteran was an unrestricted free agent and is just one of 18 players in league history to exceed 1,000 points with one team.

Buchsbaum: He’s been one of the best kickers in the game for a long time, but he hasn’t kicked quite as well the past two years.

Thoughts on the XFL's first season

Profootballweekly.com: Now that the first XFL season has concluded, what are your thoughts on the league as a whole?

Buchsbaum: Basically, it’s a minor league that gave players a chance to play. They had some very competitive games, but the quality of football wasn’t really good, and the problem is, you’re trying to sell it as a prime-time attraction when it really is the type of show that should be on ESPN2 in off hours. The concept is OK except for the added violence factor, and it can be an exciting game to go to. But it’s not a quality product.

Profootballweekly.com: From the standpoint of providing talent to the NFL, how does this league compare to NFL Europe?

Buchsbaum: It’s probably a notch below NFL Europe.
