Griese re-signs with Broncos

Brian Griese decided his future remains with the Broncos. On Wednesday, he re-signed with the team for six years and $39 million, including a signing bonus of just more than $12.5 million.

PFW: Can you comment on Griese staying with Denver?

Buchsbaum: It’s a tremendous move for the Broncos. They’re getting a good quarterback who’s an excellent fit in their system for a very reasonable price. If you put Brian Griese and Drew Bledsoe on the open market, Griese would have a lot more value, and look at the disparity in the contracts they received.

PFW: You mentioned that Griese’s agent may try to use the Chiefs as leverage in the talks with the Broncos to get some incentives? Did this happen, or did they just give into Denver’s offer?

Buchsbaum: His agent didn’t get what his agent wanted, but he got a deal that Griese said was very satisfactory. So, basically, the agent respected the wishes of his client. Though if he had gone to Kansas City and turned it into a bidding war, he would’ve gotten more.

Napoleon Kaufman retires

Raiders backup RB Napoleon Kaufman retired on Wednesday after a six-year NFL career. Kaufman’s agent said in a statement that Kaufman was moving on to the next chapter in his life, and would devote his time to his family, the community and his ministry.

PFW: What are your thoughts in this move?

Buchsbaum: He didn’t play much for the Raiders, but every time he played, he made big plays. His explosiveness in that offense is going to be very hard to replace. He was sort of one of a kind. He could play 15 to 20 plays, yet have a major impact on the game.

Vick visits Chargers

PFW: What does this visit mean for Vick and his future with the Chargers?

Buchsbaum: Basically, what this comes down to is, they want to see what his asking price will be. If it’s reasonable, they’ll probably try to get him signed before the draft. Otherwise, they’ll continue to try to peddle the pick and figure out what to do, because the worst thing that this kid can have is a long holdout.
