contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum for his thoughts on some recent signings.
McGlockton close to deal with Broncos
Marvin Demoff, the agent for former Chiefs DT Chester McGlockton, said Tuesday his
client is very close to signing a four-year deal with the Broncos. McGlockton, who was cut
by the Chiefs last month, joins a Broncos defense that has added the likes of DT Leon Lett
and CB Denard Walker this offseason.
Buchsbaum: Hes a tremendous talent, but motivating him has always been a problem.
The one thing he sometimes gives you is a good first year with the team. Hell give
them a major physical presence inside, and if he plays hard, he will complement (fellow
DT) Trevor Pryce very nicely.
Profootballweekly.com: Given that Leon Lett and McGlockton arent exactly
guys who seem to be hitting on all cylinders all of the time, is a three-man tackle
rotation especially important for the Broncos?
Buchsbaum: Yes, because at most theyll play 65 percent of the minutes, and they
are guys who wear down.
Profootballweekly.com: As good as Pryce is, why would they want him in a
rotation instead of out on the field all the time?
Buchsbaum: Theyve got to give him some rest, and hes a much better pass
rusher than run defender.

Dallas expected to sign Banks
The Cowboys are reportedly close to signing former Ravens and Rams QB Tony Banks, who
was released by Baltimore March 1 for salary-cap reasons. The Cowboys have been searching
for a quarterback replacement since releasing Troy Aikman earlier this month. The deal is
reportedly for one year and worth $500,000 with plenty of incentives.
Buchsbaum: Banks is a guy whos always going to tease you with his talent.
Hell have some tremendous games where you think hes turned the corner, but in
the long haul hell never get it done for you. Thats been his history at
Michigan State, with St. Louis and with Baltimore. Every time a team has counted on him to
really do something, hes failed them.
Profootballweekly.com: Is this the end of it for the Cowboys, or do you see
them making more moves at quarterback?
Buchsbaum: I think its probably the end of it unless they draft someone.
Profootballweekly.com: Is it possible they could line themselves up to draft
Drew Brees and then let Banks hold the job for a year?
Buchsbaum: Its possible. Very possible.

Santiago signs with Browns
TE O.J. Santiago has signed a one-year contract with the Browns. Santiago, who hauled
in 59 receptions for 819 yards and seven touchdowns in three years with Atlanta, was
waived by the Cowboys after 10 games last season and claimed by Cleveland but remained
inactive for the rest of 2000.
Buchsbaum: Hes a guy who showed promise as a rookie, got a big head and
hasnt done anything since. |
