contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum for his thoughts on news from around the league.
Moeller to lead Jaguars defense
Former Lions head coach Gary Moeller was hired on Tuesday as the Jaguars defensive
coordinator, replacing Dom Capers, who left to coach the Houston Texans. Moeller became
the Lions head coach after Bobby Ross resigned in midseason. New Lions president Matt
Millen hired Marty Mornhinweg to be his head coach and fired Moeller.
PFW: What do you think about the Jaguars hiring of Moeller?
Buchsbaum: Hes a good coach. He has a good personality. He gets along well with
players. Its a solid choice.

Lions hire Mauck, Carthon as assistants
The Lions said on Monday that Carl Mauck will coach their offensive line. Mauck has
been an assistant with six teams since 1982, most recently for three years with the Bills.
The Lions also hired Maurice Carthon to be their RB coach, after he was turned down for
the Jets head-coaching job. He was the Jets RB coach the last four seasons.
PFW: What are your thoughts on these two coaches?
Buchsbaum: Mauck gets mixed reviews for his work in Buffalo. Hes a very tough,
emotional-type of coach. Carthon has excellent people skills and relates very well to
players.

Buffalo cap problems could force Wiley out
The Bills are reportedly ready to offer WR Eric Moulds top-receiver money in order to
keep him out of the free-agent market. But that decision wasnt the easiest to make,
because of DE Marcellus Wiley, another high-level free-agent the Bills could lose. If
Moulds re-signs with the Bills for a big contract, the Bills likely will not have enough
room to re-sign Wiley, who led the team with 10.5 sacks this past season.
PFW: How much will losing Wiley hurt the Bills?
Buchsbaum: Its a terrible blow to them, but it comes down to what do they want to
cut off, their right arm or left arm? But they have to cut off something because,
unfortunately, they are so far over the cap. Either they do it this way, or they
restructure a zillion contracts and never get out of debt. |
