Bills hire Williams as their head coach

Gregg Williams was named the Bills' 12th head coach today, taking over for Wade Phillips, who was fired last month. Williams, 42, was hired over Marvin Lewis, Ravens defensive coordinator; John Fox, Giants defensive coordinator; and Ted Cottrell, the former Bills defensive coordinator who has since joined the Jets in that role.

PFW: What are your thoughts on Williams’ hiring?

Buchsbaum: I think he’s an excellent coach. I think he’s very innovative, he’s very aggressive, and he’s extremely organized and well-prepared. I mean, he literally went in there with depth charts of coaches that he could get at each position. He had everything mapped out. He had a clear-cut gameplan for the organization, and it was just so impressive, it blew (the Bills) away. There was almost no question it was his job after he went in there. His interview was so impressive. You know, Marvin Lewis and John Fox are good coaches. They’re going to be head coaches in this league sometime. But Gregg Williams came across as a guy who could be a special coach.

Patriots name Crennel defensive coordinator

Romeo Crennel joined the Patriots on Thursday as their new defensive coordinator. Crennel, who spent his first season as a defensive coordinator with Cleveland in 2000, became available after Browns coach Chris Palmer was fired and new coach Butch Davis chose Foge Fazio to run the Browns’ defense.

PFW: What are your thoughts on this hiring?

Buchsbaum: He worked with the Jets and Giants. He’s one of the best DL coaches in the game. And he moved up to coordinator with Cleveland last year, (but) didn’t really have much of a chance. He’s worked in Belichick’s defense before.

Butch Davis hires Foge Fazio to run Browns defense

Browns head coach Butch Davis put Foge Fazio in charge of his defense. Fazio's hiring was announced shortly after the Browns said Romeo Crennel, Cleveland's defensive coordinator last season, was given permission to interview for the same position with the Patriots.

PFW: What are your thoughts on Fazio’s hiring?

Buchsbaum: He’s one of the top defensive coaches in the game. It was a very good hire for Butch Davis. And Fazio will be a solid addition.
