Super Bowl XXXV Q&A

Giants defensive coordinator John Fox

Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001

There are still vacant head-coach jobs in Cleveland and Buffalo. Are you thinking about getting an opportunity to be a head coach somewhere after this Super Bowl?

"I’ve prepared for that my entire career, and I’m excited about that opportunity. I’ve also prepared my whole career for what will take place on Sunday. Obviously, I’m very focused on Sunday. Whatever happens after Sunday, I’ll deal with it then."

What is your relationship with new Bills GM Tom Donahoe?

"I knew Tom when I was at the University of Pittsburgh. I started building a relationship with him when he was with the Steelers. He’s watched me climb the ladder and I’ve watched him climb the ladder, and I have the ultimate respect for him."

What is the mindset of your defense this week?

"I think your big players have to show up and play big in big games. I think a lot of our guys have done that, and I think guys like Michael Strahan, Jessie Armstead, Sam Garnes and Christian Peter have done that all season, and Sunday shouldn’t be any different. Those guys are veteran guys, and I expect them all to play well. We’re going to get back on the practice field today and continue preparing for Sunday’s game. We’ve waited for this all of our lives, so we’ve got to be diligent and focused and I think we will be."

What do you think when people say the Giants are a boring team?

"When you get to the Super Bowl, you really don’t care what they say about you. You’re there and nobody can take that away from you. It’s like what Wellington Mara said: ‘If we’re the worst team to ever win the Super Bowl, so be it.’ It won’t say that on the rings. You really can’t control what people say about you. We’re just trying to prepare and do our best on Sunday and see where the chips fall."

Have you noticed a change in the personalities of your defensive players this season?

"I think our guys have matured. They’ve learned that becoming more mature is all part of growing up. We’re much more mature, much more focused than we had been in other years. To sit there last week and see their faces after the championship game with tears in their eyes was exciting to see."

What are you looking for in players?

"This game is made up of a lot of different personalities, upbringings and backgrounds. That’s one of the unique things about football. I don’t want to say football is a violent game, but it is a combative game, and there is a certain amount of toughness that the game takes. If you’re a kicker, that takes a certain degree of mental toughness. If you’re a quarterback, it takes a lot of nerve to walk back there, take those hits and still deliver the ball. You’ve got to be a tough-minded person to play this game and that’s the kind of people I look for."
