Editor's note: What follows is an excerpt from Pro Football Weekly’s Preview 2000 magazine, which hits the newsstands July 5. This is PFW personnel analyst Joel Buchsbaum’s breakdown of the Raiders' running backs. Buchsbaum analyzes all 31 teams in Preview 2000. Once a week, we'll showcase a different excerpt from the magazine on ProFootballWeekly.com.

Derrick Brooks may be the best weak-side ’backer in the game. He is superquick, active and instinctive and makes plays sideline to sideline and goal line to goal line. Last season he had 180 stops and four interceptions.

Jamie Duncan will be asked to replace Hardy Nickerson in the middle. Duncan is no Nickerson, but he is smart, active and instinctive.

On the strong side, Shelton Quarles does nothing to excite, but he gets the job done. Alshermond Singleton has the play-making ability Quarles lacks but makes way too many mistakes.

Jeff Gooch was too small to play on the strong side, but he can back up Brooks and is a top special-teams player. Rookie Nate Webster is a mini-Ray Lewis in the middle. He likes to be called the "Decapitator." Webster could challenge Duncan if he behaves off the field.

Linebackers’ grade: B
