Buchsbaum remembers Cumbee

Titans college scouting director Glenn Cumbee was much more than a football scout

Glenn Cumbee, the Titans’ director of college scouting, died of an apparent heart attack at his home in Newberry, S.C. He was 52.

Cumbee, who died Saturday night, scouted the Southeast and had pushed for the team to draft several of its key players, including Jevon Kearse, last year’s Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Cumbee is survived by his wife, Susan, and his daughter, Meredith.

PFW contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum gave his thoughts and feelings on Cumbee, a longtime close friend.

Buchsbaum: If the NFL had a scouts Hall of Fame, Glenn Cumbee would be an obvious choice. However, at his funeral on Tuesday, nobody was talking about the vital role Cumbee had in putting together the AFC championship Titans team.

All everybody talked about was what a great and loyal friend the Titans’ director of college scouting was. It seemed like everyone from the parents of the quarterback who played for him when he coached in college to Lou Holtz either came or sent flowers and had a Cumbee story.

Although Cumbee was a background person who never sought much publicity or credit, the Titans are planning to give their unsung hero his day in the sun on Sunday if they can get league approval in time. While fans may think of Cumbee as the key to the Titans’ drafting such vital players as Jevon Kearse and Eddie George and countless other starters, friends just think of him as a good Christian and a great and loyal friend.
