Welcome back, Fred!

Jaguars are anxious to get RB back in lineup

By Keith Schleiden, Managing editor

This Monday night, the Jaguars get back a player they have been missing all season — RB Fred Taylor. He is explosive. He is powerful. He is speedy. And he is injury-prone.

But Taylor says that he will not be thinking about the multitude of injuries he’s had to battle through when he steps on the playing field in Indianapolis next week. He will just be thinking about finally getting to carry the ball again.

There is little doubt that the Jaguars missed their star running back. In his absence, the Jaguars’ running game virtually disappeared. In the first three games — with the likes of Stacey Mack and Chris Howard toting the rock — the Jaguars have averaged just 83 rushing yards per game. Heading into their Week Four game vs. the Colts, they are ranked 26th in rushing.

That’s not where this club wants to be. After all, the Jaguars averaged 130.7 rushing yards per game last season when they wound up the season with the No. 2-ranked rushing game.

Taylor immediately gives the ground game a huge spark, and his teammates know it.

"Obviously, we’ll be able to get the running game going, which is something we need," said QB Mark Brunell. "I believe he’s one of the best, and to have him there is certainly going to make a difference for us."

So far this season, Brunell has looked outstanding, as have his top receivers, Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell. The passing game has shined despite the lack of a true running threat. With Taylor back in the lineup, the passing game could become even more explosive — if you can believe that.

"Just his presence is a big help to us on offense," said Smith. "If I’ve got 28 in the backfield, I know they can’t put two and three guys on me every play. At least I’ll have a chance to get single coverage."

Jimmy Smith in single coverage. That’s a scary thought if you’re an NFL defensive back. And who does Smith have to thank? Fred Taylor.
