Trends, Tips and Timely Stats — Week 12

By Art Edelstein, Contributing writer

  • Trends will collide in the big rematch involving the Jets and the Dolphins. Miami is 7-0-1 vs. the spread on grass and the Jets are 4-3-1. Straight up, the Dolphins are 7-1 on grass and the Jets are 6-2. Miami is 5-0 at home, both straight up and vs. the spread, whereas on the road New York is 3-2 straight up and 4-1 vs. the spread.
  • Heading into their game vs. the Buccaneers, the Bears are 1-5 vs. the spread in their last six home games.
  • Going into their game vs. the Colts, the Packers are 0-3 straight up and vs. the spread vs. AFC East opponents.
  • Heading into their game vs. Carolina, the Vikings have won 11 straight at home but are only 6-5 vs. the spread in those home games.
  • Going into their game vs. the Redskins, the Rams are 1-3-1 at home vs. the spread. Washington is 3-0 straight up in its last three games vs. NFC West foes but 0-3 vs. the spread in those games.
  • Minus their big game vs. the Broncos, the Bengals have scored only 62 points in nine games. New QB Scott Mitchell’s 0-5 passing performance in Week Eight snapped a personal five-game streak in which he had thrown two interceptions in each game. The streak covered his play on three different teams (Lions, Ravens and Bengals).
  • Heading into their game in Philadelphia, the Cardinals have committed at least two turnovers in their last eight games. However, Arizona RB Michael Pittman has had success finding the endzone, scoring a TD in four of the last five games.
  • The Panthers have not been finding the endzone on the ground. Carolina has only three rushing TDs, none since Week Five and only one since Week Two.
  • Redskins TD machine Stephen Davis continues to roll. He has found the endzone at least once in 8-of-10 games. In a statistical quirk, the Redskins lost their last game 16-15 to the Cardinals in Week 10 (before their bye) despite not punting a single time and enjoying a 37:26 to 22:34 time-of-possession advantage over Arizona.
