Trends, Tips and Timely Stats — Week 10

By Art Edelstein, Contributing writer

  • Heading into their big game in Oakland, the Chiefs have covered all three of their previous road contests this season.
  • Heading into their game at New England, the Bills are 0-3 straight up, 1-2 vs. the spread on the road this season.
  • Will new Bears starting QB Jim Miller change the team’s fortunes in Chicago? Heading into their game vs. the Colts, the Bears are 0-4 straight up and vs. the spread at home. The Bears have not scored more than 16 points at home this year. However, going back to 1990, the Bears are 7-3 in the week immediately following their bye week. Meanwhile, the Colts are 3-1 straight up and vs. the spread on the road this season.
  • Heading into their game vs. Carolina, the Rams have won 12 of their last 13 regular-season games at home by at least 14 points. The only exception was a 41-36 win over Denver in the 2000 season opener.
  • Heading into their game vs. the Chargers, the Seahawks are 2-0 straight up and vs. the spread as a favorite this season, including Week Four in San Diego.
  • Heading into their game vs. the Broncos, the Jets are 2-1 straight up, 3-0 vs. the spread in their last three games vs. AFC West teams. The question is: Which Broncos run defense will RB Curtis Martin face? The one that allowed 407 yards in its last game, vs. the Bengals, or the one that had held its previous four opponents to 65 or fewer rushing yards?
  • How many points can we expect the Browns to score vs. the Giants this week? New York has held 7-of-8 opponents to 18 or fewer points, whereas Cleveland has scored a total of 13 points in its last three games combined. The Browns’ top three wide receivers (Kevin Johnson, David Patten and Dennis Northcutt) have yet to catch a TD pass. Only RB Travis Prentice has had a TD reception for Cleveland since Week Four.
  • Maybe the Ravens will break their TD drought this week vs. the Bengals. Baltimore beat Cincinnati 37-0 in Week Four. That is the last game in which the Ravens have scored a TD. Ravens RB Jamal Lewis rushed for 116 yards and a TD in the game, his only 100-yard game of the season.
  • The Lions’ matchup with the Dolphins features two of the top teams in turnover differential. Detroit is plus-12 and Miami is plus-9. The Lions have created 14 turnovers in their last three games.
