Trends, Tips and Timely Stats — Week Eight

By Art Edelstein, Contributing writer

  • Heading into their game vs. the Rams, the Chiefs have won 10 straight at home vs. NFC opponents, covering eight, going back to 1995. Kansas City needs to shore up its run defense with Marshall Faulk coming to town. The Chiefs have allowed 145 or more rushing yards in each of their last three games.
  • The Falcons have won 10 straight vs. the Saints, covering nine.
  • The Panthers have covered six straight vs. the 49ers. The last eight meetings between these teams have gone over the total.
  • The Ravens have covered three straight vs. the Titans.
  • The Raiders have covered four straight vs. the Seahawks, winning three straight up.
  • Heading into their game vs. the Cardinals, the Cowboys have lost both home games by at least 17 points. How much does Dallas miss Deion Sanders? The Cowboys had at least one interception in each of their last nine games last season but have had only one since Week One.
  • Bears QB Cade McNown has been very generous in even-numbered weeks. He has been intercepted eight times in three games during those weeks but has not thrown any interceptions in four odd-numbered weeks.
  • One team that benefited from McNown’s generosity is the Lions, who have created at least four turnovers in each even-numbered week this season. Something will have to give when they play the Buccaneers on Thursday night. Tampa Bay had no turnovers when these teams met in Week Three.
  • Fumbles are a big reason for the Packers’ struggles. Green Bay has lost 10 fumbles but has recovered none of its opponents’ fumbles.
  • The Bills’ defense will have a big test vs. the explosive Vikings offense. Buffalo surrendered 303 total yards last week vs. the Chargers, the first time this season it had given up 280 or more.
