Trends, Tips and Timely Stats — Week Four

By Art Edelstein, Contributing writer

  • Heading into their game at Tampa Bay, the Jets have won straight up in their last four games as an underdog.
  • The Ravens have won four straight, covering three times, in their last four games vs. the Bengals.
  • Heading into their game in Chicago, the Lions are 1-9 straight up and 1-9 vs. the spread in their last 10 games on grass, including playoffs. The past two seasons, Detroit is 1-7 straight up and 2-6 vs. the spread on the road vs. NFC Central opponents.
  • Heading into their game vs. the Steelers, the Titans have won 16 of their last 17 straight up (13-4 vs. the spread) in their last 17 games vs. AFC Central foes (including playoffs).
  • Two of the top teams in turnover differential meet when the Broncos (plus-9) face the Chiefs (plus-5). Denver QB Brian Griese, whose availability for Sunday’s game was expected to be determined late in the week, has not been picked off, whereas the Kansas City defense has had at least one interception in each game.
  • Turnovers could also be a big factor when the minus-8 Seahawks face the minus-4 Chargers.
  • The Ravens (plus-3) have done a much better job of holding on to the ball than the Bengals (minus-5), and it’s reflected in their records, 2-1 and 0-2 respectively.
  • Turnovers do not appear to affect the Vikings, who are 3-0 despite having a minus-4 turnover differential.
  • Tennessee and Pittsburgh have combined for only one takeaway this season (none for the Titans, one for the Steelers).
  • The Giants are No. 1 in the league in rushing, rushing defense and time of possession. RB Stephen Davis will need to have a big game. Last year he rushed for 309 yards and four TDs in two games vs. the Giants.
  • Why has Arizona been so competitive? One reason might be penalties. The Cardinals have only been penalized 20 yards in two games compared to 170 for their opponents.
  • The Bears and Lions appear to be giving up on the run. Both teams have had fewer rushing attempts each successive week this season.
