The Cardinals signing DT Mark Smith to a one-year contract

DT Mark Smith has signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals.

Smith missed all but two games last season due to a contract holdout and a knee injury.

According to a published report, he accepted the team's offer for a little more than $1 million. Smith will become an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Smith's signing increases the likelihood that the Cardinals will cut DT Eric Swann for salary cap reasons.

ProFootballWeekly.com asked editor-in-chief Ron Pollack to weigh in on the subject.

Q: What kind of player did the Cardinals just re-sign in Smith?

Pollack: It depends on whether you think the team is getting the player who excelled in 1998 or the guy who hardly played in 1999. In 1998 Smith played at a high level, displaying very good quickness and a quality inside pass rush. There was even some thought that he might eventually develop into a Pro Bowl caliber player. After playing so little last season, though, it is hard to say what the Cardinals have in Smith. This is a critical season for him in which we will find out which way his career is headed.
