NFL Europe

With the NFL Europe season now complete and the Rhein Fire basking in the glow of their World Bowl title, ProFootballWeekly.com asked contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum for his thoughts on the league.

Buchsbaum: I think it’s a very good league for the development of quarterbacks, receivers and cornerbacks. I think those are the three positions that benefit the most.

I think guys like Pat Barnes, Kevin Daft, Danny Wuerffel really had a chance to grow as quarterbacks. None of them are going to be the next Kurt Warner (because) that’s a one-in-a-million story. But these guys now have a legitimate chance to make NFL teams as No. 3s.

I also think, as evidenced by the Bears, you could see the development of receivers in this league, because the most important thing for a receiver to do is to be in live action in game conditions and having to catch the ball, and that’s what this league gives them. It also gives cornerbacks that exposure.

I think one cornerback who really improved himself is Duane Hawthorne of the Cowboys. (Upon being drafted) no one thought he’d make the team. Now some people think he could actually compete for a starting job.
