The Steelers’ signing of Gabe Northern

| Gabe Northern, an outside linebacker
who started 32 straight games for the Bills, has agreed to a two-year contract with the
Steelers. The Steelers said Wednesday that Northern has yet to sign, but it was reported
that the deal is complete. Northern's salary will count $500,000 against the team's salary
cap.
Northern, 26, a four-year veteran from Louisiana State, will be replaced in Buffalo by
Keith Newman, a fourth-round draft choice last year.
ProFootballWeekly.com asked contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum for his thoughts on the
signing.
Q: What’s the scouting report on Northern?
Buchsbaum: He is a blitz-type outside linebacker who had great potential as a pass
rusher coming out of Louisiana State, but with Buffalo, he never was consistent. He’d
flash the great talent, and then he’d disappear, and it was really frustrating for
them.
Q: Will he compete with Joey Porter to replace Carlos Emmons?
Buchsbaum: Right. His strength is pass rushing.
Q: What do you think of the Steelers’ LB corps as a whole with this addition?
Buchsbaum: I think it’s an excellent corps that is especially strong in the
middle. With (Jason) Gildon and these players outside, they’re extremely strong
there. Gildon is a power player who can rush; these are speed guys who can rush. |
