The Bears’ signing of Brian Urlacher

The Bears announced the signing of first-round pick Brian Urlacher Friday to a five-year deal. Terms were not immediately disclosed.

Urlacher, the ninth overall pick in April’s draft, played a variety of positions at New Mexico but is expected to be a linebacker for Chicago. He is the fourth first-rounder to agree to terms, joining Cleveland’s Courtney Brown (No. 1), Cincinnati’s Peter Warrick (No. 4) and the Jets’ Anthony Becht (No. 29).

Here’s what contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum told PFW about the signing:

Buchsbaum: This is why the Bears drafted Urlacher. He’s not only a great athlete; he’s got great character, a great work ethic, and he’s anxious to get started. He’s a kind that realizes he’s gifted, realizes he’s got a lot to learn and realizes the worst thing for him would have been to miss any training camp. So he got a fair offer, and he signed. This is the type of attitude that teams need in first-round draft picks to bring the people back. They don’t need the arrogant, self-centered athletes who just care about being the "highest-paid this," the "highest-paid that." They want people who are willing to talk to their agents and tell them to make a fair deal and get it done.

Q: Because Urlacher played so many positions in college, was it even more important for him to get into training camp on time?

Buchsbaum: Yes. He’ll probably start out at "Sam" ’backer, and then eventually he’ll move to the middle.
