Ravens OT Jonathan Ogden's contract negotiations

The Ravens are getting ready to begin negotiations on a contract extension for OT Jonathan Ogden. The three-time Pro Bowler is slated to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2000 season, and the Ravens don’t want to let him get away.

Team owner Art Modell has gone on record as saying that Ogden deserves to be the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL. Modell would like to lock Ogden up for the duration of his career.

Both sides would like to have an extension signed by the start of training camp, which opens in late July.

ProFootballWeekly.com asked contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum about Ogden, and the money that the top NFL offensive linemen are earning.

Q: Where does Ogden rank among current NFL offensive linemen?

Buchsbaum: "He’s one of the top four or five."

Q: Who are the others that are in Ogden’s league?

Buchsbaum: "Larry Allen, Tony Boselli, and then it’s close. You could make a case for Willie Roaf some years. (Orlando) Pace in St. Louis is coming up. (Walter) Jones in Seattle is coming up."

Q: Does he deserve to become the highest-paid offensive lineman in the NFL?

Buchsbaum: "He’s got the potential to be the best in the game, but I’ve always believed you should do it first (before you get paid)."

Q: The elite linemen are now looking at $6 million per year — basically, quarterback money. Are they deserving of that?

Buchsbaum: "No one deserves the money these players are getting now."
