Randall Cunningham’s signing with the Cowboys

QB Randall Cunningham, who was cut by the Vikings last week, has agreed to a three-year deal with the Cowboys, where he will back up Troy Aikman.

Cunningham’s deal calls for him to get a $500,000 signing bonus and make $500,000 in base salary this season. The Buccaneers and Lions had also shown interest in Cunningham.

Minnesota released Cunningham in a salary-cap cost-cutting move after he refused to take a pay cut in the offseason.

ProFootballWeekly.com asked contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum what he thought of the move.

Q: Why do you think Cunningham chose the Cowboys?

Buchsbaum: It’s hard to figure what Randall Cunningham thinks sometimes. Basically, he could have stayed with the Vikings and probably made well more than $1 million and started one more year, throwing to great receivers with a top offensive line in front of him. Instead, he in effect forced the Vikings to cut him. Now, he’s signed with Cowboys, where he will just be a backup to Troy Aikman for half a million dollars a year. Either Cunningham does not want the pressure of being a starting quarterback in the NFL, or there’s something wrong with the logic here.
