Steve Young’s rumored retirement

A published report, citing unnamed NFL sources, said Thursday that 49ers QB Steve Young will retire from football within the week.

Young has been struggling to choose between three options: play for the 49ers, join another NFL team or retire. He hasn't played since a head blow Sept. 27 at Arizona left him with his fourth concussion in three years.

Young met earlier this week with Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan, but he said there were no negotiations or contract talks. He said the visit with Shanahan, who is a close friend, was advisory. There have been rampant rumors that Young would sign with Denver if he decided to play again and the 49ers didn’t want him back.

ProFootballWeekly.com asked contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum what he thought Young should do.

Q: What is your take on the rumor that Steve Young will retire?

Buchsbaum: I don’t know why Young is going through all the semantics. Maybe it’s just that he can’t accept the fact entirely yet. But he knows in his brain — not in his emotions, but in his brain — that retiring at this point is the right thing to do. He has accomplished everything he can in football. He’s won a championship, he’s won passing crowns and he’s won MVPs. He won big in college. There’s nothing more that he can accomplish. The only thing he could do is ruin his future. Now, he’s got a brilliant future if he wants it, and he could even be on ABC’s "Monday Night Football."
