The Vikings addition of Bryce Paup

The Minnesota Vikings, who have been seeking pass rushers for two years, signed linebacker Bryce Paup, who had 17.5 sacks in 1995, when he was voted NFL defensive player of the year with Buffalo.

Paup had been released last week by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The 10-year veteran and four-time Pro Bowler played the past two seasons with the Jaguars. He was released Friday, saving Jacksonville about $1 million in salary cap room.

"We were pleasantly surprised that Bryce Paup was available," coach Dennis Green said. ``We bring him in as a right defensive end, which we think is his natural position, and we think he will help us."

ProFootballWeekly.com asked editor-in-chief Ron Pollack to weigh in on the subject.

Q: What do you think of the Vikings picking up Paup?

Pollack: Paup clearly was not the answer the Jaguars thought they were getting when they signed him to a big contract. He was not nearly as effective as hoped. He only had one sack last season. That said, I think this is a nice move for the Vikings. They clearly need help on defense. Dennis Green has shown that he knows how to get productivity out of his players. If the Vikings can put Paup in a position to make players, they will be getting something for nothing. If it turns out that he has simply run out of gas as a player, it's not as if the Vikings blew a high draft pick to get him. It's a move that contains no risk and has the potential for some decent return. You can't do better than that. If the Vikings turn him loose and say that his job is simply to get after the quarterback I think he still might have something left in his tank.
