The Giants releasing LB Corey Widmer

| The New York Giants released veteran
MLB Corey Widmer on Monday, citing problems with the team's salary cap. Widmer was the
team's starting middle linebacker for the past four seasons.
"This move simply was made necessary by the reality of the salary cap,"
GM Ernie Accorsi said. "We signed several veteran free agents this past offseason,
and when you do that, salary cap room has to come from other positions."
"Corey has been a terrific Giant and a solid player here," Accorsi said.
"His character will be missed as much as his playing ability."

subject.
Q: What do you make of the Giants' decision to cut Widmer?
Buchsbaum: Basically it's a salary-cap move. They signed Micheal Barrow. They drafted
(Brandon) Short from Penn State.
Q: What does Widmer have to offer another team?
Buchsbaum: He's a good first- and second-down run-down type linebacker. |
