The Packers cutting  TE Mark Chmura

TE Mark Chmura's career with the Green Bay Packers is over.

Chmura, a favorite target of QB Brett Favre and a three-time Pro Bowl selection in his eight years with Green Bay, was released Monday in a move the team called strictly business.

The Packers made no mention of pending charges against Chmura, who is accused of sexually assaulting his 17-year-old baby sitter at a post-prom party in April.

Even before the criminal case surfaced, Chmura had an uncertain football future. He missed all but two games of last season with a neck injury that caused partial paralysis in his arms.

By releasing Chmura after June 1, the Packers save $900,000 in salary cap room.

Chmura has denied the accusations. He faces a charge of third-degree sexual assault and is expected to enter a plea on June 23.

ProFootballWeekly.com asked to contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum to weigh in on Chmura's football future.

Q: If Chmura can get his legal troubles squared away, what does he have left on the football field to offer another team?

Buchsbaum: It depends upon the health of the neck. If the neck is healthy, he's a very smart receiver with excellent hands and a very good feel for the passing game, and he's a good blocker.
