The Patriots' release of J’Juan Cherry

The Patriots released J’Juan Cherry earlier this week. Cherry, a fourth-round pick in the ’99 supplemental draft, was allegedly involved in an altercation in a Boston bar in late May.

ProFootballWeekly.com asked contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum to discuss Cherry’s rapid fall from grace.

Q: What went wrong in the J’Juan Cherry situation in New England?

Buchsbaum: J’Juan Cherry is the classic example of what was wrong with this organization before Bill Belichick took over. Cherry entered the NFL supplemental draft after he was kicked off the Arizona State team by Bruce Snyder, a coach who gives his players a great deal of leeway. Cherry was kicked off for a combination of off-the-field and academic woes. Most NFL teams just took him entirely off the board as a marginal player who had character questions. Instead of waiting at least until the seventh round to put in a bid for him, the Patriots took him in the fourth round to the surprise of everyone. He was active for only two games last year and never played in a game. After getting in more trouble this offseason, he was waived by the club. In effect, the Patriots just blew a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft that they could have used very well.
