The Jets’ re-signing of Dedric Ward and Leon Johnson

The Jets re-signed restricted free agents Dedric Ward and Leon Johnson Tuesday.

The team projects Ward as a starter at wide receiver after the trade of Keyshawn Johnson. Ward, who has been the team’s main deep threat in recent seasons, had a break-out season in ’98 but struggled last season.

Leon Johnson tore knee ligaments in the ’99 opener and missed the remainder of the season. In the past, he has been used as a third-down back and as a punt and kickoff returner.

ProFootballWeekly.com asked contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum for his take on these two players.

Q: What will Ward’s and Johnson’s roles be for the Jets in 2000?

Buchsbaum: They want both of them to be role players. Johnson’s a good return man, a good special-teamer and a good third-down player. Ward really is, in an ideal world, a fourth receiver. He’s got speed, but he’s inconsistent, and he’s not real tough.

Q: Do you view Ward as a possible starter?

Buchsbaum: He may start if they don’t discover anyone.
