Garrison Hearst’s career

San Francisco RB Garrison Hearst underwent a second surgery on his injured ankle this week. A team doctor said the operation went well, but he did not predict how soon Hearst could return to action.

Hearst ran for a team-record 1,570 yards in ’98 but broke his left ankle on the first play from scrimmage in a divisional-playoff game vs. Atlanta. He missed the entire ’99 season.

ProFootballWeekly.com asked contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum for his take on Hearst’s prospects.

Q: What does this additional surgery do to Hearst’s chances to return?

Buchsbaum: I think his career’s over, quite frankly, and I just don’t think people want to admit it.

Q: Can you put his career in perspective?

Buchsbaum: He was a guy who had one great year but never really lived up to the potential people thought he had, coming out of Georgia. But he had a lot of bad breaks along the way.
