Packers QB Brett Favre

Brett Favre is looking to rebound from his worst season since the 1993 campaign, and according to PFW’s Joel Buchsbaum and Jeff Agrest, Favre has better people around him to do just that.

Last season, Favre recorded a 74.7 passer rating, ranking 25th among NFL quarterbacks. In ’93, Favre posted a 72.2 rating. They mark the only two times Favre has rated below an 87.8 in his pro career.

"I’m as much to blame as anyone," Favre said following the Packers’ 8-8 finish to the ’99 season. "Because there’s been some easy throws that I’ve missed. I had opportunities to make plays and didn’t make them."

The ’99 campaign also marked the first time in six seasons that Favre threw more interceptions (23) than TD passes (22). Favre admitted that he probably should have missed at least one game early in the year to help heal his battered right thumb. Instead, he broke Ron Jaworski’s record for consecutive starts by a quarterback.

Now, with an entire offseason to mend his hand and a new, more-disciplined coaching staff in charge, Favre has a better supporting cast with which to work.

ProFootballWeekly.com asked contributing editor Buchsbaum and associate editor Agrest for their thoughts on Favre’s future.

Q: What does Favre have to do to recapture his old form?

Buchsbaum: He has to get better people around him, he has to stop trying to do everything himself and he has to get his thumb healthy.

Q: Do you think he has better people around him now?

Buchsbaum: Yes.

Q: What is the coaching staff going to do to help Favre?

Agrest: The biggest change in the Packers’ offense probably won’t be glaringly obvious. New head coach Mike Sherman wants Favre to do less free-lancing in the passing game and follow his progressions more closely. In watching tape of Favre’s play last season, Sherman saw too many instances in which Favre just scanned the field for an open target rather than follow the play as it was designed. Improving discipline will be a common thread in Sherman’s approach to his first season as an NFL head coach.
