Gilbert Brown’s weight loss

Word on the NFL grapevine is that DT Gilbert Brown has slimmed down in hopes of drumming up interest on the free-agent market.

ProFootballWeekly.com asked contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum to weigh in on the subject.

Q: What do you hear about Brown losing weight, and should NFL teams be influenced by this?

Buchsbaum: Gilbert Brown went to Duke to lose weight because no one was willing to give him more than the minimum contract, and his agent told him that if he got in shape and could convince teams that he was going to stay in shape, that it would mean a lot more money in a contract and if he couldn’t get huge upfront money with a signing bonus, at least he could get more incentives attached to his contract. But whether Gilbert Brown keeps the weight off or not is very much up in the air, because his motivation for this was not for personal health. It was not to become a better player per se. It was because it put him in a position to make a lot more money, and he’s near the end of his career and he knows it, and he doesn’t want the door shut on him.
