Bill Parcells staying on with the Jets

Bill Parcells has decided to remain with the Jets as director of football operations for an indefinite period.

Parcells has said that he will oversee the team for the 2000 season, helping in the transition to a new owner, Woody Johnson, and a new coach, Al Groh. Parcells resigned as head coach on Jan. 3 and was expected to leave the Jets entirely this summer.

"I indicated some time ago that I would not abandon this franchise," Parcells said. "I look forward to working with Woody Johnson and Al Groh in a collective effort to try to bring a championship to New York. I view my job very simply: to try to get good players for the coach."

ProFootballWeekly.com asked contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum to weigh in on this subject:

Q: What is your take on how this situation has played out and will play out?

Buchsbaum: I think that was pretty much expected. I think that was one of the reasons why (Bill) Belichick chose to go to New England. And I think Parcells being the dominant force he is, he’s going to have a tremendous say in the personnel department and shaping the team.

Q: Do you think he’ll be good in that role?

Buchsbaum: I really don’t know. It’ll depend how hard he works and if he depends upon other people, if he trusts other people as well as himself.
