Randy Moss’ Pro Bowl performance

Vikings WR Randy Moss was dominant in the Pro Bowl, catching nine passes for 212 yards, scoring a touchdown and setting up four other scores, as the NFC routed the AFC 51-31.

The Pro Football Weekly Internet Edition asked contributing editor Joel Buchsbaum to weigh in on Moss’ performance.

Q: What were your thoughts on Moss’ performance in the Pro Bowl?

Buchsbaum: He got a lot of man-on-man coverage. He was sensational, although he had a couple of drops in the second quarter, including one bad drop. But it looked like nobody could cover him. And the fact that he was playing against a couple of corners (whose) teams did not play in the postseason — so they were rusty — helped him too.

The Pro Football Weekly Internet Edition also asked PFW editor-in-chief Ron Pollack about Moss’ performance.

Q: Were you at all surprised that Moss was as dominant as he was?

Pollack: Not at all. Moss is one of those rare athletes — like Deion Sanders has been throughout his NFL career or like Michael Jordan was in the NBA — who elevates his game when there is a big challenge. Even in the Pro Bowl, Moss has too much athletic ability for the opposition. By going up against the best of the best in the Pro Bowl, it figured that Moss would be more determined than usual. A focused Randy Moss is usually an unstoppable Randy Moss. After the game, Moss said, "If I’m not into the game, if I’m bored, that’s the only way I think I can be stopped." If I’m a Vikings coach, I hate that quote. When Moss eliminates that line of thinking, when he learns to concentrate all the time like a Cris Carter or a Jerry Rice, that’s when Moss will have a chance to achieve everything that Rice has. That said, I was impressed by Moss’ growth as a player this season. He ran more routes over the middle than the season before, and even though the league seemed to catch up to him a bit this past season, he still posted terrific numbers.
