Super Bowl XXXIV insights

Q&A with Titans defensive coordinator Gregg Williams

Interviewed Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000

Asked what he thinks about the explosive nature of the Rams’ offense:

Williams: "They are an offensive ballclub with very unique talents and an array of weapons. Marshall Faulk has been one of the most dynamic players in the league for years, and now they’ve mixed in a quarterback in Kurt Warner who has really gotten the job done this year. And their outside team speed is really something that needs to be dealt with. Their wide receiver corps keeps you off-balance with their speed."

Asked whether the Buccaneers’ scheme that slowed down the Rams’ offense in the NFC title game will be adopted by the Titans:

Williams: "What Tampa Bay did against St. Louis as well as anyone I’ve ever seen in years is tackle extremely well. In the past four or five years, I can’t remember seeing a team tackle as well as they did on Sunday. Their scheme was similar to what ours was when we played (the Rams) earlier. We talked to their (Bucs’) staff, and one of the keys we came away with was making sure to minimize the yards after the catch."

Asked about the success the Titans had defensively in their regular-season matchup with the Rams:

Williams: "We have an ability to match up with people with our team speed on defense, and we did a pretty good job with that in the game. They also had some difficulty with our crowd noise. That was an element."

Asked what the Titans try to accomplish on defense with their ‘46’ alignment:

Williams: "If you don’t have good overall team speed, it’s tough to do what we do on defense. We do have speed, especially at cornerback — we’ve been able to find a couple of good corners with speed and size .We give people a lot of looks, too. You can only use this type of defense if you have the personnel to utilize it. The biggest thing we try to do is create some matchup problems in protection. If we can get a running back on a linebacker, or a lineman on a back, we like that matchup. Jeff (Fisher) grew up with the inventor of that defense (Buddy Ryan), and it’s something we’ve all grown to embrace. We’ve got over 50 blitzes, and we try to use them all."

Asked about Titans S Blaine Bishop:

Williams: "He’s probably my favorite guy I’ve ever coached. People tell you all of the things he can’t do — he can’t backpedal, he can’t turn his hips — but he really gets after it. When I first saw him, I wanted to know those same things But my opinion changed completely when we put him in a helmet and pads."
