| Asked about all of the attention he has been receiving: Warner:
"You just take it in stride. I want the attention of being up there in front of
millions of people, holding the trophy, when this is all over. To me, thats what
its all about. This stuff (dealing with the media) you just get up here and
answer questions."
Asked how he kept the dream of starting in the NFL alive through the difficult
years:
Warner: "Obviously, I looked to the Lord a lot and drew a lot of strength from
Him. Knowing that no matter what I face, that He was going to help me through it. And I
always believed in myself. There were no doubts that if I ever got the opportunity, that I
could be successful. I continued to believe that through the times I worked in the
supermarket and the times I played in Arena Football. I never lost sight of that. To me,
thats what its all about believing in yourself, waiting for that
opportunity, and then seizing it when it came."
Asked whether he was prepared when QB Trent Green suffered the season-ending knee
injury in the preseason:
Warner: "They were trying to figure out if I was good enough to be the backup and
if I could hold that role. So in the preseason, they were trying to focus a lot on getting
me a lot of reps, getting me a lot of time to really get a good feel of what I was about
as a quarterback. So I felt fairly confident going into that point when I actually became
a starter; it was more comfortable role for me, something that I was more used to. I think
I was able to thrive in that environment."
Asked if a certain amount of cockiness is needed to be a good leader:
Warner: "Like everybody says, there is a fine line between confidence and
cockiness. I think you have to have the right in-between where people know that
youre confident, youre not arrogant, and youre not thinking that
youre a one-man show and that you can do it by yourself. But you have that
confidence to let everybody know where you want them to be if something doesnt go
right. Youve got to take control of that and let them know how you want it done.
Thats just the position you have to take as a quarterback, so its obviously
helpful to have that as part of your character."
Asked whether there were times when he was playing in the World League when he
wanted to give up:
Warner: "Just when I was in the World League? Yeah, there were a couple of times
that it got to be long away from my family, in Amsterdam, which is obviously filled with
temptations. The environment got difficult because I was away from my family and it was
hard being a family man for so long and being so focused on that for so long and then to
have to leave it for as long as I did. That was a difficult time, but something I knew
that I had to go through to get back to this point."
