Super Bowl XXXIV insights

Q&A with Titans QB Steve McNair

Interviewed Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000

Asked how his injured toe feels:

McNair: "It feels a lot better at this time than it did last week. It’s improving, it’s feeling good . I’m going to start practicing today, and I’m going to try to do as much as I can today and tomorrow to get the timing and get the game plan down."

Asked if the very cold weather in Atlanta makes the injury worse:

McNair: "I think this is good treatment for it. It keeps my toe cold, and that’s what I do in rehab anyway — put it in a cold tub. So I think that it’s good for my toe right now."

Asked about Titans coach Jeff Fisher’s conservative offensive philosophy:

McNair: "It was very frustrating at first, but coach Fisher sat me down and filled me in (on) what his style of play is. It was a tremendous change from throwing for 4,000 yards a year in college and throwing 40 to 50 times a game. But now it’s like playing in a more controlled offense, and that’s something that I had to get used to and my mind focused on, the fact that it’s something we have to do as a team because of the great running back we have in Eddie George. He’s done a marvelous job. When you have two great athletes in the backfield, you have to share the ball. We’ve been doing a great job of that, and it’s got us this far."

Asked how he describes himself as a quarterback:

McNair: "Basically as a guy who does what it takes to win, regardless if it’s running the football, passing the football, or if it’s making sacrifices to get my other 10 guys on the field at the time involved in the offense and the game plan. The basic way to describe me is that I’m a guy who does what it takes to win, regardless of how I do it."

Asked what he thinks of Rams QB Kurt Warner:

McNair: "Everybody has an exciting story to tell in order to get into the NFL, but Kurt has taken advantage of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that he had this past year. And he took advantage of it to where he took his team to the Super Bowl. He came from the bottom, and now he’s on the top. I think that’s a tremendous accomplishment, and it shows that whatever it takes to get the job done, you’ve got to do it. He’s made the sacrifice and he’s dedicated himself to the Rams, and he did a marvelous job this year."
